With a steep rise in the standard of living of people and with automobile companies offering lucrative easy on pocket EMIs more and number of people are reading the showrooms to buy a new vehicle like never before. What one’s was meant just for a richer section of society has now become a basic necessity in today’s world, so much so that some developed countries like the US is keeping the number of cars an individual have as one of the basis to calculate if a person is above or below the poverty line. Dangerous gases emitted by vehicles especially cars have always worried the environmentalists as well as the government of their respective countries. Although if you compare co2 emission from some 1970’s car to that of some early 2000’s you will realise that the cars have comparatively become greener , cleaner and the co2 emission is far much less than before, thanks to the catalysts used in the engines and the greener fuel variants that are now in use. But still there is a lot left for us to do and take a some serious decisions about the same.

WAYS OF REDUCING EMISSION

If you are planning to buy your new four wheler then it is better if you opy for the latest model available in the market. Since late 1900’s new cars sold in countries like New Zealand have been fitted with catalytic converters to reduce the emission of level of harmful gases from the exhaust system of the  cars. Before buying a car check out for those car variant which indicate low co2 emission therby contributing your little bit to the environment. Have your care serviced regularly .Expert maintainance will ensure that the engine is tuned so that it runs on an optimal level , delivering power without burning extra fuel . Make sure that the service includes checking components such as spark plus , air filters , which are very important for an engine’s efficiency. Also, get your tyres checked to ensure that they have optimum air pressure inside them for under low pressure tyres offer more resistance  required , so your engine will work harder and will consume more of fuel  and in process will emit more carbon dioxide than it would do so in general. Chek for petrol and diseal leakages in your fuel tank regularluy and if you find one then get it fixed as soon as possible . A leaky tank not only wastes fuel but also causes pollution as it is volatile in nature and gets directly evaporated in the atmosphere. On an average, to emit same amount of hydrocarbons in your exhaust as  you would release by spilling 1 litre of petrol , you’d have top drive 12,000 kilometres. Take a walk to buy things from nearby markets instead of driving a car for it takes 17 trees 30 years to completely absorb the carbon dioxide released by a hatchback, petrol- driven car. Use public transports to commute wherever and whenever possible and also encourage others to do the same . If you get stuck in traffic jam or you are waiting on a red signal , then turn off your engine and air conditioners. This in long run will not only save a lot of fuel and money but also contribute in decreasing the level of air pollution.

CHOICE OF FUEL

Diseal produces far more energy than petrol per litre. However, the problem with diseal is that , diseal engines produces far much more pollution than a petrol or CNG/LPG driven engine . The diseal engines are responsible for emitting particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen which are hazardous to our health causing various repiratory disorders in human beings. Though leade petrol is cheaper than its unleaded variant , but, it is always advisable to use uleaded one as it protects your engine and is less polluting than leaded one.

USE OF ALTERNATIVE FUELS

Thes fuels are comparitively new in the market but more and more researches are being cnducted to chek if they are safe to use in long run. More of automobile companies are trying to modify their fuel tanks and their engines to accomodate such types of fuels in a wake to m,as e their car greener and also more fuel efficient at the same time.

ETHANOL – A type of alcohaol wich is derived from agricuyltural crops , it is touted as the next big thing as it is considered as an eco- friendly alternative of the fuel. However, its efficiency is far much les than that of petrol and also it release large amount of benzene into ground water than a conventional fuel.

ELECTRICITY- The batteries used for elecricity driven cars are now much more long lasting and lighter thjan bvefore and can be recharged either by refilling them or by pluging the battery in a socket or a charger. But , on the down side they are pretty much slower than a fuel driven car.

CNG- CNG stands for ‘Compressed Natural Gas’. This type of fuel is not only much more efficient than diseal but also reduces emission of carbon monoxide by 90 per cent and that of particulate matter by 50 per cent. but converting a car to diseal can be expensive and safety standards are needed to be maintained high as any negligence can lead to fuel leakage which can darastically increase the chances of blast.

LPG- LPG stands for ‘liquified petroleum gas’ . It is basically a mixture of butane and propane and has been in use as fuel for transportation purposes for more than 60 years! It cuts total green house gases emission by 10 per cent as compared to petrol and diseal. But , on the other hand its on road consumption can be 30 per cent higher than that of petrol and diseal . Apart from this the other problem that is faced by the car owners is the significant reduction in the boot space of the car and a much less acceleration than that of a petrol driven car.  Apart from this not all the petrol stations are equiped with an abundant stock of LPG gas so there can be issues about the refilling of tank/ cylinder can surface.

So, choose wisely for a better today and for a brighter tomorrow!
